THE POINT AT WHICH ITS GOOD ENOUGH?

Hello Folks,
The A.V. market has changed dramatically in the last 7/8 years -mainly,in the quality available for the price..I`ll clarify...

In 1998 I remember seeing a Vidikron Vision One crt projector for sale in Absolute Sounds in London for over 60k!!..Great picture..BUT..now beaten quite easily by any quality projector over 5k..In short, the high end has become more affordable..

Exactly the same is true of Audio..pre and power amps of a few years ago ..costing 10k..are easily out performed by any a.v. receiver over 1.5k now..

What this means is that you can beat a 70k a.v. setup of yesteryear with a setup costing only 6.5k now..great eh..

But..there is still high end stuff now I hear you chant...indeed there is ,you can still pay 500k for a set of speakers..150k for a projector...BUT..there is a big difference now...in 1998 the high end was exclusive,now? ..its trickled down to more affordable propositions...

For example, its always been known that in A.V. and HI FI..its the knowledge that counts, the knowledge that can blend the correct components-that can setup to optimum,to ensure that the gap between components-whatever the cost is minimalised..

In short, its establishing the point at which its good enough and presenting value for money..unequivocally,just talking about equipment,25k would get you a stunning A.V. system..75k would be better but not by a ratio of 3 as you may think...maybe all round,a 5% improvement...

So the question todays buyer needs to ask themselves is this..is it worthwhile to spend 50 grand more for a 5% improvement?..It is, IF your budget permits....now,when we talk of the difference between a 75k system and a 250k system the margin of improvement becomes incredibly narrow, maybe a 2.5% improvement....

We are left with a 7.5% improvement between a 25k system and a 250k system..why is that?..why so little?...Because we are limited by the source...and there is a point where it is good enough,in other words..all the resolution is presented correctly in a high def signal..and all the encode within the audio signal replayed at optimum...

You cannot make the picture better beyond the source, you can make the projector brighter..you can make the sound louder...you cant change the source..you are limited...thats why improvements are incredibly miniscule once the source is presented correctly..and those improvements are never going to be apparent UNLESS the person setting up the equipment has the skill to eke out every last drop of potential from the source..

Now,it gets even more complicated, because,in an ideal world, the projector would display the source image exactly as was intended and the amplifier would just amplify the signal without adding any of its own characteristics..and the speaker replay as intended...

Of course this is not the case, different amps sound different, different speakers handle the signal differently and so on...

For example, what kind of sound do you prefer?...Do you like ridiculously sharp?...if so...go for digital speakers like Meridian...if you like a full warm sound...Klipsch...absolute clarity?...Martin Logan...expansive sound?...Magnepan...and so on...

Now these sound differences are actually more to do with the technology employed than the speakers reproduction...a direct array speaker..even if supplied by digital amps, still has crossovers and blends frequencies using different drivers for bass, treble and midrange...and this is incorrect..in real life sound is point source...its not split..its cohesive.....thats why i prefer horn, electrostatic and ribbon speakers..due to the nature of the technology employed they handle sound in a more natural way...

..Its about what technology is employed in creating a great sound not how expensive that speaker set is..if its direct array..its limited...thats my view supported by physics...and my view regards replication of cinema sound is supported by ALL the top cinemas in the world..who ALL use horn speakers from either Klipsch or JBL...because they are incredibly efficient, produce an expansive sound, can handle the peaks and troughs of a movie soundtrack superbly without breaking a sweat....

...and If I may add,the Klipschorn hi fi speaker of 30 odd years ago is STILL recognised as one of the greatest speakers ever made..at any price....

So,wonderful with music as well...

(*For Jazz and blues,I would use Martin Logan,or more importantly ..Electrostatic speakers.. )

But as an all rounder the Klipsch THX Ultra 2 set from Klipsch takes some beating..at any price..and regularly features in all the best speaker polls normally shoe horned between Focal and Wilson costing ,in some instances,10 times more..!!!!....

How much is this venerable set?..less than 10k....in fact,I would not advise the normal mortal, however much money they may have, to EVER spend more than this on a set of speakers because its doubtful they would hear any benefit at all unless setup incredibly well by experienced folks...(*may even be worse if not setup well)..in short, you could be throwing all that extra money down the drain....:-)

So,thats the point at which speakers are good enough for example...10k..thats what i would advise to spend for a stonking performance..no more necessary...

**This principle applies to all a.v. components..and at Projectiondreams,we have determined over many years trials and comparisons,,what is best for the pricepoint..the point at which its good enough for our customers...

Other companies dont do this..they will tell you their 50k speakers are wonderful BECAUSE they are 50k..and frankly, thats complete nonsense..but of course wonderful for the pocket of the chap selling..:-)..I could do the same..I would make more money..but I wont, because its not the truth...

Whats important to me has been maximising the performance of good kit to make perform as well with the source as possible and replicate that source to optimum..thats setup orientated through skill...

With Projectiondreams the high end is here..and affordable...:-)....you can be confident that you have no need to spend more, because we offer the best solutions..not the most expensive..the best value..

Vince

VIEW OF A VERRRYY SPECIAL ROOM IN THE ALMANCIL SHOWROOMS!

Dear Folks,

Here is the first view of one one of our 6 showrooms in the new facility in Almancil..the FIRST consumer THX ULTRA 2 4K cinema in Portugal..

Everything in this room has been considered, from sound roll off\s to THX baffle wall and the use of the Klipsch THX ULTRA 2 speaker system, this is a 9.2 sound system, prepared for 11.2.

**Other kit info to follow...

Around the screen is black velvet and a floating 2.35.1 curved acoustic 8ft wide screen.,hinged to be able to show the speakers behind...the panels are acoustic with suede covering with oak accent front and rear stages with blue accent lighting..

Initial sound checks have confirmed the initial acoustic analysis with a superb deep, crystal clear sound that begins and ends exactly as it should..proof positive that NOTHING touches horn speakers for sound quality in a correctly prepared Cinema room!

As Ive said many times, setup is EVERYTHING..and the most crucial performance aspect is the thought given to ensuring the room is a level platform in terms of audio responses..its not just about the kit.the kit is but the messager of the dream-the dream is the correct construct...

Projectiondreams dedication to fastidious setup, proficiency relating to cinema accuracy and Cinema 360 ideology with the design/acoustics/construct/equipment we use, is what allows us to always do something special for our customers..and in Almancil..this can be seen...

Indeed,we already have numerous appointments booked before we have even opened!

Book yours early...

..So much more to tell you...:-)

SOMETHING SPECIAL IN THE ALMANCIL SHOWROOMS..

Hello Folks,

I have delayed the official opening of my new showrooms in Almancil (*though Projectiondreams is still trading as normal) due to my decision to ensure it is truly special in the mix of products/services offered...if your gonna do it..do it right...:-)

Obviously,I dont want to spoil the surprises totally, but I do want to share with you a few *secrets* of some of the uniqueties we will be offering...

To whet your appetite, lets first talk Satellite...this has been a nightmare in the Algarve for the consumer who has only been offered incredibly basic solutions...and convoluted sky card sevices that are incredibly expensive...

..What IF...Projectiondreams had a solution that could give you ALL your Sky channels WITHOUT your need for a card?..What IF you could watch different premium channels in different rooms from ONE sky card?...What IF you could have ALL the premium channels you want for 50% of the normal cost?....Interested?

What IF..Projectiondreams offered FREE satellite channels built into our Media servers and media players..What if you could start watching a movie or T.V program downstairs and finish watching it in your bedroom?

What IF our customers could operate these multi purpose boxes from their iphone?..and the movie paused when you got an incoming call?

At Projectiondreams,we have these solutions NOW..and you will soon be able to see for yourself...

What about finally,a completely customised, cost effective, home automation solution-?

What about the first THX ULTRA consumer cinema on display in portugal, with THX baffle wall?

What about for the first time EVER in Portugal ,the complete expertise of home automation, cinema, security, multi room A.V. and satellite from one QUALIFIED company that ensures ALL is 100% for the customer and completely 100% integrated...

...and this guys..is a fraction of what we will have on display...:-)

YOU HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO *COOK*..

Hello Folks,

As consumers we have many choices, but how do we know whats the best choice?...With many companies professing to be able to do this and that..wheres the truth in the situation?...How does the consumer make an informed choice?

In the Audio Video world, its actually quite easy!

What a customer should look for is pedigree, proficiency and previous work...

At Projectiondreams we have 40 years plus of pedigree-involving real movie company experience-the two highest Audio Video credentials..THX and ISF acreditation and regularly display pics of our projects, indeed ALL the pictures on our website are OUR work.

I would also add that uniquety is important, the ability to produce something special...we`ve done that as well...

http://www.behance.net/gallery/STARGATE-PROJECT/3580957

BUT..the most important thing to consider is the setup of the kit,all the above contributes to that of course and our Cinema 360 ideology goes way beyond the rank and file purveyors of equipment..

http://www.projectiondreams.com/20665/portugal-home-cinema/cinema360/

THE truth is its KNOWLEDGE that allows the perfect blend and setup of the right equipment for the space..

A great chef  can blend the ingredients into something special,a beautiful dish...an average cook can never do that EVEN if they use EXACTLY the same ingredients-they will never know the correct preperation or the right amounts of ingredients...

Its the same with great setup, great setup comes with knowledge, the ability to make your kit perform at optimum is through experience..someone without that experience can NEVER equal what Projectiondreams are able to do on setup..and there is NOBODY in Portugal with that kind of experience and knowledge of setup apart from Projectiondreams!...Thats a Fact..

There are many *cooks*..there is only ONE Chef..able to REALLY cook..Projectiondreams...

Our work proves it...and our customers...new and old..can see that....we dont just talk the talk..we walk the walk...

We continually set the bar of excellence...so the customers choice is crystal clear...:-)

Best Regards,
Vince

DESIRABLE OR ESSENTIAL?

Hello Folks,

In Europe-as opposed to the U.S.-a Custom Cinema is not seen as essential more desirable.

This is changing..and should..the old mentality of a house having- 4 bedrooms ,a kitchen and a "living" room (**"Living Room"..what does this mean anyway?....we live in ALL the rooms..it implies nothing, its a nonsensical label...) .. is ..thank god..changing...

Progressive Architects & Developers, are realising that designing a house for 8 people to sleep with other areas only designed for 2/4 is madness...its completely out of balance..yet thats what we have had for years..an indoctrination thats its o.k. to spend 20k plus on your kitchen..(even if you dont cook in)..and 20k plus on a car ..but cheapskate on your entertainment in the home...

NOT..in the U.S....where its the norm to have a Home Theater ..and have a good one....why?

Because in the U.S. they base their home around their entertainment,,their living...in Europe we have based it round our sleeping..:-)

Frankly,I see no sense in spending a fortune in the kitchen-especially in the Algarve where most eat out..or eat outside...who actually spends much time inside in the kitchen?..in the cooler months ,maybe..3/4 months?

Most families today are 3/5 persons...allowing for a guest bedroom,no average family needs more than 4 bedrooms....most couples certainly dont need more than 2 bedrooms...

So whether an average family or couple..nobody really needs more than 4 bedrooms....

The ideal home in the Algarve for a family or couple would be 2-4 bedrooms,a functional kitchen, the ability to eat outside..outside kitchen/barbeque..AND an Entertainment space..now,that Entertainment space should include the things you like..whatever that may be..most like the Movies..or Sport..or T.V....so it should include a decent sized t.v. at least, the ability to watch the media you like..indeed why have a seperate computer room..convergence is here...so have a *media area* in your Entertainment room..maybe a pool table, maybe a bar..or IF you have the space..have a Custom Cinema for the ultimate Movie experience....or a Music Room (*hi fi room)......

There are of course other ideas Projectiondreams can fly your way..what about relaxing in the pool and watching a Movie or listening to Music with a nice glass of chilled wine?

Why not have your *Entertainment Room*..outside...?...

I do not consider your Entertainment desirable..I consider it Essential..life should be about enjoying yourself not counting your unused Bedrooms or lamenting the huge investment in the kitchen when the missus never cooks.....are we that controlled that we only live in our *living* room?...Better lifestyle is about better living and at Projectiondreams we are about helping our customers build a better lifestyle..:-)

..Of course,we live in a society that encourages mass drug taking-Alchohol &Nicotine-to keep us *maleable*..and I like the odd drink as well, but you know what/...who wouldn`t trade all the money squandered in bars and smoking over the years to have something special and non threatening now?

..Do the maths..IF you have spent 100 euros a week on booze or fags for 30 years you have spent over 150,000 Euros....had you not..you could be sitting in that Aston Martin now...or indeed have a Custom cinema and Entertainment room...and a Jacuzzi....

O.K..,i`m sure wev`e had fun along the way..but at one heck of a cost..and who wouldn`t want that money back now?.....and ask yourself this..was it essential?...or Desirable.....really?...neither...it was at best frivolous,at worst unecessary.....

So,I`m sure we could argue that we have wasted money..that we have been educated to think the more bedrooms our house has the better off we are..whilst we short change our own internal entertainment....

I want to change that...ANYONE that has a basement but NO toys in it needs their head examined..why?..because you would have paid for that basement option when you paid for the house...that SHOULD be the jewel in the crown..the area where ALL your entertainment is contained..whatever it is....and IF you still like a tipple..have your own bar and save more money..increase the size of your property and make your property more valuable..and your lifestyle FAR better...

Vince Myers

THE IMPORTANCE OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Hello Folks,

An oft overlooked aspect of a Custom Cinema build-or indeed any build-is the requisite project management experience.

At Projectiondreams we have over 15 years project management experience gained managing major  moves/revamps and builds in the corporate world for Blu Chip companies, this has served us well in the custom install business and continues to do so in any install/revamp we take on.

If we state a project time we achieve that to the day.

This project skill & accuracy means that schedules are prepared correctly, lead times for purchases considered and staged payments structured with rationale.

There are no hidden costs on a Projectiondreams project-the whole experience is painless for the customer-as it should be.

Vince Myers M.D.

COMPARISON BETWEEN 1080P AND 4K

The next generation of 4k resolution (4096×2160) is now officially known as ULTRA HIGH DEFINITION.

It will probably be 2/3 years at least until such sources are available with Uktra high definition Blu Rays etc..but for Projectiondreams it cannot come soon enough, recently we were asked by Sony Europe to evaluate their 4k high end Projector-the only currently available 4k projector able to show 4k sources.

It was stunning, here are some screenshot comparisons with a standard 1920 x 1080 LED projector, exuse the colour variances ,both were set at d65,but the capture of LED images is incredibly tricky.

The thing to notice is the incredible detail in the top shots on each photo, now bear in mind, this is upscaled 1920 x 1080p to 4096 x 2160p..so not true 4k,but nevertheless the sense of actually being there on the SONY VPL VW1000ES was unbelievable....and this kind of performance you can have now..:-)

THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME?

Hello Folks,
Every poll iv`e ever read regards this subject is either decided by critics or box office or votes.

There are of course flaws in all process`s,if its the critics choice there has to be some obscure Japanese film or swedish film about whales..:-)..box office-unless adjusted for inflation-is meaningless and voting is always by current people from the era the poll is taken in...

Certainly if we look at critics polls, the consistent top movie is Citizen Kane-but box office adjusted for inflation is Gone with the Wind from 1939!..which I would argue certainly proves, based on ticket sales that Gone with the Wind is the most sucessful movie of all time.

Box office not adjusted always turns up Avatar as the top movie..a blatant re hash of Dances with Wolves that rarely features in most polls...but is a far superior movie in every way..

But is it the greatest?  Just because A Movie is massively hyped and loads of folks go and see it isn`t indicative of how many actually liked it..or loved it...

Current public polls are pretty hopeless because most polled are young people whose knowledge of movies is limited to 15-20 years at best...wheres the poll from 90 year old movie fans?....Thats would be more relevant...

..So these polls normally turn up that mediocrity-the Shawshank Redemption as best movie.
Mainly because in the young folks polled, its the only movie without an explosion, wizards wand or chap in a latex suit! ..I.E. the only film with half a story they can remember..

Of course it comes down to personal choice ultimately, but I think there are a handful of movies that can be considered truly great, and by great I mean great performances, great music, great story, great direction and so on...

In terms of directors,I dont particuarly like Speilberg, for me his movies are formulaic and apart from Jurassic Park and Schindlers List,he hasn`t made a very good movie let alone a great one..

George Lucas the same, the Star Wars movies are fun thats all..beyond that..average movies...

I Would also add that for me,its seminal movie moments, overall impact and the fact the movie hasn`t dated- that count as well..

So here goes..my top 30..My top tier Movies.

PROJECTIONDREAMS THROW DOWN THE GAUNTLET!

Hello Folks,
We all know talk ultimately is cheap..every company will tell you they are the best..(*though unlike Projectiondreams they cannot prove it.)..

Nevertheless, there are folks out there who had *cinemas* from other companies years ago, most no longer trading now..before Projectiondreams opened their Install division.

The choice before for the customer WAS limited..inasmuch as there were no qualified companies around..there were companies that sold cheap and cheerful kit that was passed off as a cinema amidst a nicely interior designed room, there were companies that sold very expensive kit that WAS NOT optimised so therefore no better performing than well setup mid range kit.

In 95% of cases (*a lot of which iv`e revamped and cured now) there was zero thought given to light control, equipment placement or acoustics ..or seating placement for screen size, brightness levels, viewing angles and so on...

The other 5%,who realised there was nobody good enough to meet their total needs, imported Projectiondreams type qualified companies from the U.K....and of course paid through the nose for this remote install...

..But that`s the past..now a qualified company-who understands and masters in all the above  is here..

Projectiondreams...

I`m not interested in offending the sensabilities of the unqualified,i`m interested in giving folks the BEST experience..and telling the TRUTH.

Anyone who has had a cinema 5 years ago or more has an out of date cinema, probably wont have 3d..or full HD...may not even have a Blu Ray player...may have a poor-by comparison to what we can do-designed Cinema..or the wrong screen,or poor acoustics...and so on....

In fact,I will go one step further and say this..IF you haven`t had one of a handful of top notch U.K. qualified company do your cinema...it may suffer in some respect..it could mean your kit isn`t performing to optimum and your not getting your moneys worth....

So,we will put our money where our mouth is...and state the following.....

Projectiondreams WILL come to your home F.O.C...make the requisite suggestions to improve ...F.O.C.....and/or re setup your existing equipment to perform at its best and provide you with the equipment to revamp your cinema cost effectively...this wont be F.O.C...:-)

I can assure you in ALL instances your cinema will be improved..WHOEVER originally  installed.

But here is where I throw down the gauntlet...anybody with a projector ..I will setup their projector for free and improve in 30mins the previous setup..

IN OTHER WORDS..to all you older cinema owners..there is no cost to gaining the advice to improve your cinema or your projector display picture..

What will happen afterwards...is that ABSOLUTELY,UNEQUIVOCALLY,100% ...you will have gained something for nothing...and have a better setup..or indeed an upgrade path...that`s how passionate I am about ensuring folks get the best from their audio visual setup..whoever has done it in the past..thats the past...Projectiondreams are the future..the best..and we have no fear putting our money where our mouth is and proving it..

Vincent Myers..M.D.

THE A.V. CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN THE ALGARVE PART 2

Hello Folks!

Well, the new Almancil showroom is coming on really well,iv`e delayed my opening to probably end November/December because I want to do something unique in every area,to tailor for all tastes in both design, equipment and lifestyle...I`m happy now, I have EXACTLY the right mix...:-)

The first comment from a major developer who was intrigued to see the progress and popped intoi the showroom was..."..MY GOD VINCE! ....this is going to blow people away!"

I`m already very pleased because I want the most special for my customers, new and existing...and of course..my showrooms will continue to evolve..I will take the bar as far as it can be taken....in every facet...not least of course, the provision of the ultimate Audio Visual experience and performance.

Be prepared for a wonderful surprise..;-)

Best Regards,

Vincent Myers M.D.

STRANGE GOINGS ON IN THE ALGARVE A.V. WORLD?

Hello Folks!

I recently had an email from a chap I know well in the A.V. community in the Algarve.

Very cordial-indeed Iv`e helped this guy with designs and setup in the past.

One end statement was a little bizzare..:-)

In essence,it said that by my stating my companies qualifications and pedigree etc..I WAS MAKING THE OTHERS LOOK BAD..

Eh?????....:-).......

I replied to this mail that I state Projectiondreams qualifications, capabilities and achievements..because i`m proud of all of this-and I won`t dumb any of this down to make other companies feel "better about themselves"...

If they take this as a "pop"  against them..so be it,but it isn`t...I begrudge nobody a living and respect anyones right to trade ,but by the same token..I do have a reservation that companies with little pedigree in my trade openly tout themselves capable of this, that and the other...

In the same manner as Gordon Ramsey would raise an eyebrow at someone whos once boiled an egg calling themselves a chef..:-).

Beyond that,I give others in the *A.V.trade* over here-little thought...

Ultimately, the customer is not a fool, they i`m sure will make an informed choice..and thats good enough for me.

What does annoy me,is companies that take cinema pictures from the web ,and display them on their site as their own..this is lying to the customer and leading the customer to believe its their work-when it isn`t...there are other companies-decent enough in HA (*home automation) that state they do cinemas-when I know for a fact they have never done one...this is lying to the customer as well...

ALL pictures of cinema installs on the Projectiondreams site are OUR installs...and i`m proud of them.

..Another recent Algarve A.V. horror story,iv`e had to *tidy up*...

large project we are on,where we gained the project agains`t another company....now this company had proposed lesser quality kit but had promised the builder and electrician on this project *kick backs*....

In the end, this inflated the final total price for the client..a developer...so he was paying top dollar on average kit...

Of course,he chose our quote..better kit,better price..better project organisation,better time scale....

This meant that the electrician and the builder lost out on their *....kickbacks*...so the electrician walked off site as the builder hadn`t given him his money because he was relying on this....

We had to step in on behalf of the client and resolve this..we got the electrician back on site..and *squared* the builder...

This was achieved using decent dispute resolution skills-and indeed the client said to me he wished he could put us in charge of the whole build project..which had taken over a year when it could have been done in 6 months!

*For all this developers future projects we now have a far broader remit...

This is a perfect example of business professionalism over the *old pals act*...

We all know that having a few beers with someone in the Melting Pot doesn`t necessarily make them the best man for the job...the *best man* for the job is the best company..plain and simple...

This should be judged on merit.

Thankfully, this is happening now,Projectiondreams are being seen for what they are..easily the best..really,the choice is clear now..whereas in the past it wasn`t...and that bodes well for developers and customers alike that can be confident of a great job..and heck,i`ll have a couple of beers AFTER the job to celebrate something done well..:-)

So to those loyally comitted to an individual/ mechanism that may not be the best in a business sense,I urge good sense as i`ll probably have to tidy things up at some point anyway..so we may as well do it right from the start..:-)..let us do it right off the bat, save you money and deliver you a better performance is all i ask..

Projectiondreams-clear choice..

Best Regards,
Vince

PROJECTIONDREAMS RAISE THE BAR AGAIN!

Hello Folks!!

Us busy chaps at Projectiondreams have a lot on at the moment-not complaining mind-what with the refit of our new Almancil showroom and a large house project involving Home Automation in 9 zones, cinema, entertainment area, kitchinette, outside audio video system, video entry, security, multi room audio..you name it..

In addition we have a number of other projects taking shape with Juventino-the interior design company.

Now Juventino has traded in Europe for over 15 years and is recognised as one of the best in Portugal..his work is STUNNING....

Never before in Portugal, from inception of design to completion, has equal thought been given to both the aesthetic and technical attributes of a project..with Projectiondreams never has an interior design been planned with acoustic and visual considerations from the get go...

I dont have to tell you the benefits of this, but to know that your audio visual environment has integrity within a world class aesthetic brings an incredible peace of mind to clients and developers both, who traditionally had to accept a nicely decorated room with a few bits of kit lobbed in as an afterthought with little acoustic or visual consideration contained...

This is no longer the case..we can design a cohesive total solution with the skill of a world class interior designer and our own Cinema 360 ideology that builds on ISF and THX technical skills..its the best of both worlds in one package..:-)

...And...I will have some other very special anouncements coming very soon..:-)

UNIQUE A.V REVAMP OF OLDER SETUPS

Hello Folks!
There is nothing worst than spending a lot of money on an Audio Visual system or environment only to have it become outdated in 4/5 years necessitating expensive upgrades...Invariably,if you havent originally purchased from the company that does the upgrade-they are not interested in PXing your older kit..or if they do..offer you peanuts...Even with companies that have originally supplied,a usual method is that the company over price the new goods to compensate for the amount they give you on the old goods..so you get nothing for your old goods..

At Projectiondreams we have ONE Upgrade Policy.

(1),,For ALL customers we offer them 30% of the original R.R.P. price for their old kit in trade up..ALL Projectiondreams prices NEVER exceed R.R.P.

On any older system we will recommend exactly what you need, you may for example be able to keep the speakers but the A.V. receiver needs updating...in most cases of systems over 4 years old,the projector will need upgrading to full HD/3d or indeed in high end systems..4k (*4 times the resolution of 1080p).
We will give a FREE site survey and advise exactly what you need to revamp your system..

We will explain exactly how you can benefit from the newer sound codecs found on audio equipment and resolution advances in projectors..

One little tip I will give you..IF..you have a full cinema, your screen aspect ratio should be 2.35.1...this is the widescreen aspect found on most blockbuster movies..if your staple diet is movies..this is the screen you should have...NOT 16.9...16.9 is a compromise aspect ratio designed for t.v...SKY is 16.9...and not ONE blockbuster movie has ever been made in 16.9..

This is why when you watch a blockbuster movie on a 16.9 screen you have black bars top and bottom ...now in those black bar areas you are losing a lot of the projector panels resolution..so that 1920 x 1080 projector you have?.....your not watching all the panel resolution available..your losing about 33% of the possible resolution...in the black bars..

At a cinema you dont have this problem, they employ a constant height system..so only the sides move in and out depending on how wide the image is...

In short,5 years ago and more you could have had a setup that ensured that no resolution was lost in black bars top and bottom-but this was expensive and ONLY achievable with anamorphic lens ` and Auto masking CH (*constant height) screens....now?..you can buy projectors with the ability to have *lens memory* and different aspect ratio setups available at the touch of a button, or in some cases-automatically....

..But..IF your purely sourcing for a cinema where SKY wont be employed...do not buy a 16.9 screen..do not accept ANY company that suggests such...because they havent got a scooby..:-)

At Projectiondreams we suggest the *punishment to fit the crime*..our aim is that you get the best system..and the right equipment for the environment..we are not interested in short term gain ..we want long term customers-as such its always R.R.P.s....and contrary to opinion not ALL a.v. kit in Portugal is more expensive than the u.k...(*not from us anyway)..we regularly beat u.k. prices through careful buying and the right distribution channels/partners.

So to all projectiondreams customers-current,new and old..be secure in the fact that you can upgrade/optimise your setup cost effectively..:-)

Best Regards,
Vince

BETTER SETUP-THE HOLY GRAIL

Within the A.V. world its long been known that you more you spend the more you enter into the laws of diminishing returns.

In other words,a 10,000 Euro amplifier wont sound 10 times better than a 1,000 Euro amplifier..a 20,000 Euro projector wont have a picture 4 times better than a 5,000 Euro projector..

For a lot more money kit will only offer a smidgen of improvement and that smidgen will need to be carefully brought out with a great setup.

..This is where it gets tricky for most,BECAUSE if you dont have a great understanding of setup and are not -at the very least-THX and ISF qualified, how could one know where something wasnt performing to optimum?

..And this has been the common thing on the Algarve for many years, people have been sold 30 grand projectors that perform no better than a 5 grand projector because the person thats sold it has not had the requisite skills to really eke out that extra bit of performance available that would justify its premium..

..It gets even more *complicated*,because the de facto picture standard for projectors is to setup to D65-as defined by ISF (Imaging Science Foundation)..this is defined criteria to ensure *the accurate science of the image*...

So,the bottom line is..the guy that installs/sets up your projector must at least.be ISF qualified to understand what he has to achieve by way of setup...

IF he is not,he probably wont have the requisite skills to make your expensive purchase worthwhile...this is what sets Projectiondreams apart from the crowd..we have these qualifications and can make your equipment perform to absolutely optimum.

There are other factors too...lets consider this..IF your projector image has to be composed of certain scientific criteria to adhere to defined standards by ISF..then it would figure that every projector once setup, would look exactly the same?

It should....kind of,,,but having the correct colour balance and greyscale is one thing..its how the projector presents that also influences the final picture...for example brightness levels differ from projector to projector ..projectors under 5k seldom produce more than 1,000 ansi lumens calibrated..(*and the calibrated figure is normally 50% of the manufacturer stated..) ...this is fine for screens upto a certain size..but for the really large screens you need more than this...for ambient light conditions you may need more...BUT..what holds a great picture in ambient light for example may look horrible in blackout conditions...

So matching is critical..you want...the right brightness projector + the right screen/screen gain material/correct throw ratio + angle of view calculations..this must be determined by the room size..

My aim is always to get close to d65,but using knowledge to *punch things up a tad* to achieve a better overall dynamic-this is part of Cinema 360 criteria..

Because D65 can look a tad muted, whites a little creamy..things a little too much towards red for me..

So,this D65 knowledge is but one step of the journey and not enough in my view on its own..consider it a fairly level playing field to start though..

For example, because I worked at ARRI,the company that supplied the 35mm cameras into the movie industry-i know exactly how the camera is setup to perform..how the movie lights are setup before they go to a film set..thats what the camera man shoots blockbusters like Star Wars and LOTR with..so i know what kit they are using to film the movies and they are not rigid to D65...there are some subtle differences which i cant reveal for obvious reasons..:-)

What none of us know is how the lighting is set up for that specific film shot...yet,most film makers attempt to capture what they see..reality..so there are certain things at Projectiondreams we consider in ensuring the projected image is as accurate as possible to what it is attempting to convey...

Ideally, one would have different picture presets for different sources because video output levels can differ..material can differ and so on...their are industry standards for hd and standard def..and they are different..colour range is greater in hd..and the standard is rec709..recommended..this may be an applicable level in all projectors IF this preset was accurate..so really, that should be determined...and i havent even begun to discuss gamma curve..again their is an ideal here..if this is wrong for the given projector things can look too washed out or too dark....

There is a limit to how much one should apply sharpness/detail controls...too much and everything is sharpened destroying sense of depth...too little and things can be defocused almost...dependant on the projector...and of course sense of depth can be greatly increased by CR (contrast ratio)..but most CR figures quoted by manufacturers are nonsense....
Contrast ratio is defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest color (white) to that of the darkest color (black) that the system is capable of producing. A high contrast ratio is a desired aspect of any display. It has similarities with dynamic range of course...

Many display devices favor the use of the full on/full off method of measurement, as it cancels out the effect of the room and results in an ideal ratio. Equal proportions of light reflect from the display to the room and back in both "black" and "white" measurements, as long as the room stays the same. This will inflate the light levels of both measurements proportionally, leaving the black to white luminance ratio unaffected.

Some manufacturers have gone as far as using different device parameters for the three tests, even further inflating the calculated contrast ratio. With DLP projectors, one method to do this is to enable the clear sector of the color filter wheel for the "on" part and disable it for the "off" part.. This practice is rather dubious, as it will be impossible to reproduce such contrast ratios with any useful image content.

Another measure is the ANSI contrast, in which the measurement is done with a checker board patterned test image where the black and white luminosity values are measured simultaneously. This is a more realistic measure of system capability, but includes the potential of including the effects of the room into the measurement, if the test is not performed in a room that is close to ideal.

It is useful to note that the full on/full off method effectively measures the dynamic contrast ratio of a display, while the ANSI contrast measures the static contrast ratio.

..Then of course there must be accurate shadow detail.. which is-surprise,surprise.. the amount of details in the shadows..so say for example your display/projector is setup incorrectly..you will not see all the details in the image which can also destroy the sense of depth of the image...

Now a company that does not understand this criteria..what is a great picture and how to achieve it..cannot do the following...

1..Suggest the correct projector for the room..(*For example ive seen many 30k Runcos installed over here on small screens which is utter madness as these Runcos are meant for huge screens and their premium is based on this ..i.e. their increased brightness...but as brightness goes up...CR performance goes down...so again, the ideal balance for that screen and room are critical lest you get a too bright image that will give you huge headaches and a poor black level perfromance..)

2..Get the optimum performance out of that projector.

At Projectiondreams..we will suggest the projector and sized screen that is right for that sized room taking the conditions into account and setup accordingly for your sources...

Its the exact same scenario for audio setup and acoustic preperations..again having a THX  professional with Projectiondreams ensures that the same fastidiousness is applied to accurate solutions for the given area as video setup.

DIRECTIONAL SOUND-SNAKE OIL?

First, let me state there is no such think as directional sound to the effect where you can sit in one area and only hear sound in that area and no where else (*unless you have complete sound proofing to studio standards around that area.)

Some speaker manufacturers advertise *directed sound* and imply that the sound only goes where its directed...and elsewhere you hear nothing-this is incorrect unless they have found a way to defeat the laws of psyhics.

For sound to be truly directional it would have to travel in straight lines and sound doesnt behave like that it travels in waves which spread according to the size and amount of speakers.

So,,its snake oil I`m afraid..:-)

Sony VPL-VW1000ES 4K SXRD Projector Review

DOWNTURN? RECESSION?..EXCUSES…..

We constantly hear such expressions as Downturn and recession to explain lack of business, but recently I had an excellent conversation with a top property seller in the Algarve…and he said this to me..
..**..These are excuses as to why your not selling,a cop out..sure,there may indeed be less money in some pockets but that’s not a reason to sit idly by,it’s a reason to try harder,be more focused in your strategy, find the tailored solution that makes a tougher choice easier.**
During this conversation,we spoke a lot of *Uniquety*..what will make one  property stand out and be an easy purchase?
..Well Im biased here,in the old days it was..**lets have lots of bedrooms**..now its why?..ANY property should have the things that make you want to live there,it should be tailored for you..a swimming pool is a de facto norm of course, interior designed rooms are also popular..as are landscaped gardens…
..Yet,what is not commonly known is the fact that NONE of these things add significant value to the home, they are desirable not essential..
So what adds value to that home>?  Simple…MORE space…and better utilised space..
This is precisely why the top developers are thinking less of amounts of bedrooms and more of loading that property with every *toy* at their disposal including, saunas,Jacuzzis, gyms, entertainment rooms,Custom Cinemas,Home Automation,Multi room A.V. ..even bowling alleys…and they are absolutely,unequivocally..spot on…..
Indeed,at the current time the most value you can add to your prestige property is a custom cinema/entertainment room into a basement or unused space..One client Im dealing with is adding some 170 sq metres to his home by populating with a gym and custom cinema, coms room, golf simulator, pool table..you name it….
The estimate of added value to the property against cost is a minimum of plus 15%...which is awesome….or the things you love haven’t really cost a copper, indeed they have just made your house worth more…
Precisely why we are so busy…people in Europe are waking up to what the yanks have known for years..a lifestyle on show sells a property.
So.your sitting in that real estators..bemoaning the *downturn*?..Look at the propertys for sale..why are they staganant?...its not the price because that’s been reduced 4 times already….could it…could it,be the mere fact it doesn’t have enough to offer the 21st century  buyer?
Food for thought eh?
Rgds,
Vince

***Projectiondreams Official Partners.

I LAMENT THE LACK OF SPECIALISTS

Im increasingly perturbed by companies advertising that they can build cinemas in Portugal who dont have ANY qualifications whatsoever.
To a company like Projectiondreams-who do have THX and ISF qualifications, who have learnt their trades over many years, this is frustrating.
I begrudge nobody a living, but unqualified folks installing poorly, that which they have little knowledge of or little ability to support, damages the Audio Video market in the Algarve.

We are repeatedly asked to *put right* others installs or resolve issues for clients who have been left high and dry when something has gone wrong.

In the last 3 years, three a.v. companies have gone to the wall since Projectiondreams have opened in the Algarve, another company has downsized ..this is no coincidence,,by the nature of the quality of work we do and the service we offer..the unskilled will fall away...and thats ultimately good for the customer whose confidence can be restored .

Projectiondreams make no idle boasts,we regularly show we are the best by a country mile..and we are proud of that...

I let our work do our talking..
